Lophophora diffusa is a species of plant in the cactus family (Cactaceae) native to Mexico. Also known as the peyote cactus, it is closely related to Lophophora williamsii, the better-known species of peyote cactus.
In contrast to Lophophora williamsii, which has a spherical shape, Lophophora diffusa forms flat, branched groups with several flattened shoots. The shoots are covered with small warts and have a bluish-green color. Like all peyote cacti, Lophophora diffusa contains mescaline-containing alkaloids that can have psychoactive effects.
Lophophora diffusa is traditionally used by indigenous peoples in Mexico as a medicinal plant and for religious purposes.
